Middle School Pastoral Care

ISB promotes focused learning across the curriculum and outside formal lessons. In Middle School, students learn about social responsibility and develop their emotional abilities . They learn to make and keep friendships, work in teams, solve problems, deal with conflict, manage strong feelings, compete fairly, and respect others' rights and value diversity.

A Life Skills class covering study skills, health, emotional and social issues is taught. If a student has any concern, they can choose to speak with their homeroom tutor, Head of Year, school nurse, subject teachers and/or Principal.

External experts may be brought in to address issues like substance abuse and sexual health education. Parents will be notified when these events take place.

High School Pastoral Care

High School students are young adults. Many will take the initiative to seek out a trusted friend, teacher or advisor who can support them in time of need. Some however, remain reluctant to seek help for themselves and the following structure is in place so that students find support to help them address needs should they arise.

Every student is placed in a Homeroom with a teacher Homeroom Advisor. Advisors meet with their homeroom each morning for registration and this ensures a regular meeting point for students. Homeroom Advisors also act as CAS Advisor for their homeroom students and meet with students individually from time to time to aid personal reflection and to monitor progress.

Should concerns arise with individual students within school, they will be brought to the attention of the High School Principal, who takes overall responsibility for the pastoral care of students in High School. Concerns that are primarily of an academic nature will be handled by the IB Diploma Coordinator. During the year, the High School Principal chairs a forum of those who regularly interact with High School students so that mutual concerns can be shared.

Should parents become aware of issues that might affect the performance or behaviour of their son or daughter at school, they are invited to contact the High School Principal, who is aware of the need for both confidentiality and sensitivity.
