Community Activities
Basel is an outstanding city for our students to explore and learn. The first hand, educational experiences are varied and enriching. Our younger students reinforce their classroom learning through field trips such as exploring farms, local ponds, Basel Zoo, the Kunstmuseum and forests. Senior School students have the opportunity to visit various notable destinations such as the Schaulager museum on guided art tours, University of Basel library and physics lab, and the Technical University physics lab to enhance their learning.
From Service activities with the Reinach public library, coaching the local sports teams to singing at the old folks’ home, Senior School students automatically identify many service opportunities as they get to know the local communities. This allows the students to reach out, integrate and fulfill their Middle School Community & Service, as well as High School Creativity, Action, Service requirements, which form part of the curriculum.
Besides artists’ visits and workshops, local guest speakers regarding careers and current event topics are also invited to ISB. Visits to local business establishments and job shadowing by students within the Basel region are organized to give our High School students an insight into their possible career choices.
Culturally, our Junior and Middle School students enjoy the local carnival festival called Fasnacht. During this festival, our older students observe the richness of a unique celebration whilst our Junior School students create costumes and participate alongside the Swiss school children in the parade. Confetti and candies are tossed everywhere and the children enjoy hot tea and cake at the end of the parade.
Grade 3 students get to participate in the “Aesch Clean Up Day” where, together with the Swiss students, they clean up the town where the school campus is located. For the class that has collected the most rubbish, a well-earned reward is received.
Grade 4 students are invited to partake in the bike safety training course which is offered by the local police. The students bring their bikes to School and learn how to ride on the open roads using hand signals and learn the importance of using proper bike safety.
Schoolwide, students are encouraged to participate in the Basel Stadtlauf and raise funds for this yearly run through Basel City.
