Jaquee Dixon-West...A Woman on a Mission

Many students at International School Basel will recognize Mrs. Dixon-West as the person they see when they are not feeling well or have an injury at school. Jaquee Dixon-West, Nurse at the Senior School, is taking her talents as a health care provider to help others. At the end of July, International School Basel Nurse, Jaquee Dixon-West will be heading to Maiduguri, Nigeria for a 6 month mission with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). We spoke with her to find out about the work she will be doing in Nigeria and previous missions she has taken.

"This will be my third mission with the ICRC. My first mission was to Kandahar in Afghanistan in 2011. In this 6 month mission I was working in a ministry of Health hospital supporting local nurses and treating war wounded civilians.

My second mission had me heading to South Sudan at the start of 2014. During that time I was part of a four person mobile surgical team that flew in and out of opposition held areas in South Sudan to treat war wounded civilians and soldiers.

Like in my previous missions this next one will see me treating war wounded civilians and supporting local nurses who have been caught up in the conflict in Northern Nigeria.

I will be working in the main hospital in Maiduguri which the ICRC has supported for a number of years now.

It is so rewarding to be able to share my nursing skills and knowledge with local nurses who through no fault of their own have had their training interrupted by conflict.  It is always very humbling to see staff members continue show up and hold down a job despite all the challenges they are faced with living day to day in a conflict area.

Having the skills to help others in need and make a difference (even if it is a small one) is also very rewarding and I would like to hope that my time in Nigeria brings some relief to those who;s lives are being effected by this conflict.

I wish you all well for the start of the next school year and look forward to seeing you all in February 2020!"

We are proud of the work Jaquee is doing outside of school and look forward to hearing from her during and after her mission to Nigeria.
