Sustainability – a strategic priority
We are deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact and fostering innovative learning opportunities. These priorities ensure our students are prepared to lead responsibly and adapt to a rapidly evolving future.
Sustainability is one of the four pillars of Vision 2030, our ambitious strategic plan towards a holistic, inclusive and future-ready education. Our goal is to reduce our environmental impact as a school and as a community, and to empower students to contribute towards a sustainable future.
WE ARE AN ECO-SCHOOL
International School Basel is proud to be a member of Eco-Schools, highlighting our commitment to sustainability. The recent award of a Green Flag acknowledges our efforts to:
- Implement sustainable practices across campuses;
- Empower students to drive change for sustainability;
- Address global challenges and future needs;
- Reduce our ecological footprint and contribute to a better society.
How We Learn Sustainably
Culture
Creating a culture of respect for our environment, both natural and on campus, and a space where conversations around environmental sustainability can happen.
Curriculum
Examining our existing curriculum to highlight links between learning in the classroom and environmental sustainability, bringing in speakers and workshops that teach the science behind climate change or discuss topics like fast fashion, finding opportunities for field trips or outdoor education that ties in with our curriculum.
Community
Building a relationship with the community around ISB’s three campuses through trash pickups, CleanUP Day, and other activities; continuing to build the relationships within our school community of students, parents, and staff, through our Eco-Committee and on-campus events, like International Festival.
Campus
Looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint, redesign spaces, reduce food waste, encourage recycling, & create green spaces that foster appreciation for nature.
The Eco-Committee: Joining Forces Towards a Sustainable Community
Our commitment towards sustainability is a joint effort involving our entire community.
The Eco Committee unites students, teachers, and parents to coordinate and prioritise efforts towards our ambitious sustainability goals.
STUDENTS
From the Green Warriors and Eco-Council in Junior School, to the Eco-Council in Middle School and Environmental Society in Senior School, every ISB student can join our student groups in taking small actions that make a big difference.
TEACHERS
Under the leadership of our school-wide Sustainability Coordinator, three campus coordinators work in close collaboration with teachers and staff to ensure our actions are well-organised for maximum impact.
PARENTS
As members of the ISB Community Association, our parents are best placed to act as ambassadors to spread our commitment to sustainability well beyond the school's walls.
