Academic Pathways to Earning Diplomas

Discover the essential graduation requirements at International School Basel.

All students who complete the International School Basel (ISBasel) graduation requirements will receive an ISB diploma. Students who complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma requirements will receive both the IB diploma and ISBasel diploma.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

To earn an IB Diploma, a student must gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance including successful completion of the three essential elements of the DP Core.

The three elements of the Core are:

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) experiences, and
The Extended Essay (EE)

The course distribution requires one course each in the following Groups:
Three of these courses must be taken at the Higher Level (HL) and three at the Standard Level (SL).

Studies in language and literature
Language acquisition
Individuals and Societies
Science
Mathematics
and one additional course which may be in The Arts or a second course in one of the aforementioned groups

International School Basel (ISBasel) Diploma

To attain an ISBasel Diploma, students must earn 22 credits of course work in Grades 9 – 12, however most students will surpass these requirements.

Year	Required Credits
Grade 9	8 credits
Grade 10	8 credits
Grade 11 – 12	6 credits (3 x 2 courses)
Total	22 credits

Grade 9 – 10

One credit will be awarded for each successfully completed one-year-long Grade 9 – 10 course. During these two academic years, students must successfully complete eight courses per year, earning a total of 16 credits.

Language and Literature
Mathematics
Science
Individuals and Societies
Design
Arts
Physical and Health Education
Modern Languages

Grade 11 – 12

Two credits will be awarded for each successfully completed two-year-long Grade 11 – 12 course. During this time, students must successfully complete three courses per year in areas of their interest, earning a total of 6 credits.

Topics of study include:

Studies in Language and Literature, Individuals and Narratives
Language Acquisition
Individuals and Societies, Global Politics, International Relations
Experimental or Environmental Sciences
Mathematics
Arts and Electives

Achievement Requirements

Students must pass all classes with a minimum grade of 3 in order to attain the ISBasel Diploma.

Service REQUIREMENTS

“We all help.” This statement, embedded within our school’s Mission, signifies our commitment to service and community. All ISB students must complete a service requirement each year from Grades 9 - 12 to attain the ISBasel Diploma.
