ISB IS AN ECO-School
International School Basel is proud to be an Eco-Schools member, thanks to our efforts to embrace sustainable behaviour. This formalises our commitment to be a sustainable school and engages us in meaningful collaboration with like-minded schools. In line with the Eco-Schools goals, we aim to:
- Encourage the implementation of sustainable development practices in the school
- Empower students to take action and be the change for sustainability
- Help students address current and future challenges of a global society
- Contribute to a better society
- Improve the school's ecological footprint

This symposium emphasized empowering students and schools with practical skills to address climate change effectively. It underscored the importance of collective effort in tackling environmental challenges and highlighted the potential for transformative change through individual and collective action. In winter 2022, our school implemented energy-saving measures, such as lowering the heat temperature and turning off electrical equipment when not needed. Looking back to our consumption data, we are thrilled to realise how much progress we have made.
Our Grade 7 and 8 students are actively collaborating with their peers in the Reinach Primarschule on a weekly clean up initiative called the Abfall Challenge. Both groups of students take turns each week to clean up their shared Fiechten Campus.
Our Grade 8 student Alannah presented her Tram Buddy project to our Grade 5 students. Her idea comes from her passion to take action against climate change and help the ISB Community to reduce their carbon footprint by setting up a Tram Buddy System so that more children can take the tram instead of being driven to school by car.
ISB students attending the 6th Youth Forum Switzerland enjoyed a day filled with inspirational guests and young adults inspiring and educating students from schools in Switzerland and beyond, about topics relating to sustainability and global issues.
The Swiss Government is urging citizens to save energy in preparation for foreseen shortages this winter. At ISB, we feel well prepared to respond to this call, not only to reduce our costs, but also to change our behaviours.
