Safe Recruitment Practices

International School Basel actively promotes and defends the rights of the child to physical and psychological well-being, as defined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In line with the school’s Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct, we implement safe recruitment procedures to ensure that all members of the teaching and non-teaching staff at the school, including part-time staff, cover staff, and student activities instructors, such as musicians and sports coaches, are subject to police clearance and/or criminal background checks.

References and background checks are conducted on all successful applicants.

International School Basel will never ask or require candidates to send money for application fees, interview fees, visas, plane tickets or other costs associated with recruitment. Candidates who have applied for a position at International School Basel will not be asked for information related to bank accounts or other private information. If you have been asked by someone you think may be representing International School Basel or another international school to send money to cover such costs, you may be the target of an elaborate scam. Several good international schools have recently had their web sites cloned, and candidates have been asked to send large amounts of money. All candidates are urged to be diligent in investigating potential schools during the recruiting process and before signing a contract. Use extreme caution if you have been asked for money or private information.

Please note, for all positions:

Due to work permit limitations, preference is given to candidates holding Swiss work permits or Swiss/EU citizenship;

Teacher Requirements

We welcome applications from teachers holding a Bachelor's degree in addition to a teacher certification. Examples of such undergraduate & postgraduate certifications include:

Swiss PH Teaching Diploma
German Lehrbefähigung
French CAPES Certification
U.K. PGCE/QTS/Certification of Education
U.S. State Teaching Licence
Canadian Province Teaching Licence
South African HDE
New Zealand Trained Teacher's Diploma (K – Grade 6) plus Bachelor of Education (Grades 7 – 12)

Applicants holding only TEFL/TESOL/TOEFL/CELTA or similar qualifications do not meet these standards.

To apply, you must be qualified to teach the subjects and grade levels indicated in the job vacancy. We required at least 4 years of post-qualification/certification teaching experience in a comparable school. We have a strong preference for candidates with teaching experience and training in the relevant International Baccalaureate Programmes (DP/MYP/PYP).

Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Please Note —most of the recruitment activity takes place from September through January.

Substitute/Cover Teachers

We welcome candidates who live in the Basel area and who are eligible to work in Switzerland for substitute/cover teacher and tutor positions.

While we do not advertise these positions, we welcome applications year-round from qualified and experienced teachers who are available to substitute teach. They are required to hold the same teacher qualifications and certifications as those listed for teacher positions.

Substitute/cover teachers are employed by International School Basel according to demand and availability. We do not guarantee assignment or a minimum of annual working hours for substitute/cover teachers.

Support Staff

Vacancies for Administrative and Support positions will be advertised as they arise. Each position's unique requirements will be detailed in the corresponding advertisement.

Documentation Required

ISB requires each candidate to provide a thorough personal and professional profile. All applicants (both internal and external) are required to submit, at a minimum, a complete application including:

up-to-date CV
letter of application
names and contact details of at least two (although three is preferred) confidential professional references who have line-managed the candidate, one of which should ideally be the applicants current Head of School if appropriate

Depending on the nature of the position, copies of academic/technical certifications and additional references may be requested. Applications will not be considered when:

received via hardcopy rather than electronically as instructed
CV and cover letter are in a language other than English (unless otherwise specified)

All applicants are subject to satisfactory references and pre-employment background screening.
