Bring Your Own Device

International School Basel is committed to delivering the highest quality education in-line with current best practices in the integration of technology. It is for this reason that we have implemented the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.

At ISB, the understanding is that learning is not tied to a device, classroom or a seat. Learning takes advantage of space, pedagogical knowledge, a variety of interactive, paper and digital resources in the community our school creates. The initiation of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program will help to enable students at ISB to take ownership and responsibility for their learning and to ask and seek answers in our digitally infused world.

BYOD Requirements 2021/22

For the 2021/22 academic year, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program encompass Grade 5 – 12 students. In Senior School (Grade 9 – 12), all students will be required to bring a Mac or PC laptop. In Grade 5 – 8*, students are also required to bring a device, but may also choose a Chromebook.

*Please note, Grade 8 is a transition year where students who already have a Chromebook may continue to use it until the end of Grade 8. However, if purchasing a new device for your Grade 8 student, please follow the recommendations below.

When considering a purchase, it is advised to balance the decision with your personal preferences, the student’s interests, computer size, and operating system familiarity. As students will be carrying their laptops around campus, it is advisable to seek a laptop that is not too bulky or heavy. Computers designed primarily for gaming can be quite large with low battery life and are not recommended.
