For students who are curious about how things work and enjoy solving problems, robotics offers a space to design, build, and bring ideas to life at every stage or their learning journey.

Senior School

Designing, Building, Competing

In Senior School, students can choose to take their interest in robotics further by signing up for a Grade 9 or Grade 10 Robotics class, or by joining the Robotics Club, which is open to students throughout Senior School.

Whether they are completely new to robotics or already have experience, students learn in a hands-on environment where they explore how robots are designed, built and programmed, before moving on to creating and improving their own projects.

Working in teams, they share ideas, take on different roles and learn how to solve real problems together. Along the way, they build confidence in communication, teamwork and leadership.

For those in the Robotics Club, there are also opportunities to travel and compete against other schools and teams across Europe. These events give students the chance to test their robots, learn from others and experience robotics in a fun, real-world setting.

Middle School

Exploring Robotics & Coding

Grade 6 students at the Aesch campus can join on-campus, fee-based after-school robotics activities, offering a hands-on introduction in a familiar setting. In Grades 7 and 8, students can continue through the Middle School Coding and Robotics Design course, part of the Arts and Design programme.

Using VEX IQ robots — designed for younger learners and generously funded by our Community Association (CA) — students explore the foundations of robotics, programming, and design in a practical, engaging environment. These experiences form a strong bridge toward more advanced robotics opportunities in the Senior School, with plans underway to introduce a dedicated Z-Block robotics group next year for students interested in competition-focused work and future events.

Junior School

Early Robotics Exploration

Junior School students in Grade 3 – 5 and Middle School students in Grade 6 can explore robotics through optional, fee-based programmes led by external providers. These hands-on sessions are designed to spark curiosity and introduce coding, engineering, and problem-solving in an engaging way.

Students can choose from different levels of robotics experience, from introductory LEGO-based activities that focus on simple builds and early coding concepts, through to more advanced LEGO SPIKE sessions that include sensors, programming, and collaborative projects. For those ready for a greater challenge, AI-enabled robotics introduces more complex systems and early artificial intelligence concepts.

Together, these options offer a supportive entry point into robotics, allowing students to build confidence and develop early STEM skills at their own pace.

ISB Robotics Team Qualifies for VEX Robotics World Championship

Congratulations to the four Grade 11 students from the SigmaBots Robotics Team who have qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship, the largest robotics competition in the world.

ISB Robotics Teams Shine at Alpine Robo Games 2026

We are incredibly proud of our Grade 11 students who represented ISB at the national qualifying competition Alpine Robo Games 2026 at TechLabs. Their professionalism, passion, and teamwork speaks volumes of their commitment towards learning beyond the classroom.

In this episode of the ISB Podcast "Breathing Fire", two students from the ISB Robotics programme, together with their teacher and founder of the Robotics Club, Ringo Dingrando, talked about the ISB Robotics classes and club, competitions with other Swiss schools and their future plans to compete abroad.

ISB Robotics Club Hosts Our First Robomesse

The Robotics Club at International School Basel hosted its first annual Robomesse competition on March 29th. The game this year was called VEX Tipping Point, and featured four robots at a time competing within a square arena.

In the ISB Robotics Club, we incorporate creativity, logical reasoning, strategy and communication to design the best robots possible. Although the end goal is the competition, the holy grail of the Robotics Club is the freedom to innovate.
